Somerset on the Pier is a unique accommodation option in Hobart that not only is literally on a pier in a very central location, but is home to 56 one and two bedroom apartments, perfect for people like us who prefer more space than a standard hotel room when we travel.

We were excited to give Somerset On The Pier Hotel Hobart a try when I recently went on a staycation with my daughter for her birthday. It turned out to be the perfect choice!

Somerset On The Pier Hobart Review

If there is one thing that stands out about the Somerset Hobart above all else, it has to be the location.

Not only is it in a very central location on Elizabeth Street Pier on Hobart’s waterfront, but it has the novelty factor of being on top of a pier in a converted 1930s pier building.

This means some great views of the Derwent River and Sullivans Cove as well. I don’t think any hotel in Hobart beats the location combined with the fun appeal of being on a pier and the stunning views.

I could never get sick of looking out at the water from our room. It is so close.

There are four room types – one bedroom and family options with both “Executive” and the more expensive “Premier” version of each. All apartments are loft style and come with fully-equipped kitchenettes, Smart TVs, separate living and dining spaces, washing machine and dryer and daily housekeeping (except Sundays).

These are perfect if you wish to self cater and prefer apartment style accommodation over hotel rooms.

The Premier Balcony and views are definitely worth the extra money

We stayed in the One Bedroom Premier Apartment. The difference between Executive and Premier apartments is that Premier have their own private balconies. This is why we picked a Premier.

After staying at the Somerset Hotel Hobart, I’m extra glad we picked the Premier. It looked to me like they are all on one side of the building (the outside view pictured above) rather than the other where the Executive rooms must be. The views are likely to be better from the premier side.

The Somerset Pier Hotel Hobart family apartments are much like the one bedroom except there is a second bedroom upstairs in addition to the loft style one as well as a second bathroom. It sleeps four with the option of adding a bed for a 5th person at an extra charge.

While labelled as a “family” apartment, these can also work well for travelling companions. Just note that there isn’t total privacy in one of the bedrooms as people in the main bedroom need to walk through it to get downstairs.

Our One Bedroom Premier Apartment

I loved our room. It was very comfortable and well organised so it felt spacious and like everything was there that we needed.

On walking into the room, our bathroom was first up on the left. There is a shower over a bath and the washing machine and dryer in here.

Then there is the open plan kitchen/living/dining with the furniture all facing out to the balcony and view which was just stunning.

I like how there is multiple blinds too so we could just have some shade from the sun if we needed it or full black out. There is double glazing on the windows and sliding doors which I was grateful for as I thought it might get loud with the restaurants and bars directly below us but I never heard a sound.

The kitchen is on the small side but well equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher and cooking equipment. There is a double seat sofa as well as a dining table, two chairs, Smart TV and a desk and chair.

There are mini bar supplies of Tassie produce.

To the side of the living area is a staircase up to the loft style bedroom which is spacious with a king sized bed, cupboard, luggage stand, iron, ironing board and TV.

Everything is in great condition and we were very happy. The only thing I would have liked to see is robes. I love a good hotel robe.

Free wifi is available throughout the property, although if I have one complaint, it’s that it’s not very good. I ended up switching off the wifi on my phone as it was frustrating and I was much better off using my phone data.

reception at Somerset On The Pier

While the location means you aren’t going to be parking outside your room, there is Somerset On The Pier Hobart parking available for free close by. This is limited, so if you need Somerset On The Pier parking, I recommend letting the hotel know in advance.

If you don’t have your own car, airport transfers can be arranged and the Somerset On The Pier apartments Hobart have their own tour desk which can help you arrange any sightseeing you want to do.

I read beforehand there is a residents’ lounge but I didn’t come across this or any information on it. It’s possible it was shut due to Covid restrictions.

I had also read there is 24-hour reception and while there is someone on call for 24 hours, the reception desk itself is not manned after 8pm.

There isn’t a Somerset On The Pier restaurant as such. However, this hotel is so well located that there are many dining options nearby. On the same pier under the hotel, you’ll find an Asian restaurant (Asian Gourmet On The Pier), a fish restaurant (Fish Frenzy), a burger bar (Billy’s Burgers and Bar) and T42 restaurant and bar.

There are also many, many dining and drinking options within a short walk.

Final Words

Our Somerset On The Pier reviews found a great hotel that I would highly recommend to anyone coming to Hobart. In fact, I’m sure we will do more staycations here! It’s in such a great spot and has great space and views. It’s hard to go past.

At the time we booked, the Somerset On The Pier Hobart rates were very reasonable and I think this hotel can be a bargain although I imagine if you were here over the new year period that would be quite a different story.

Still, if you are looking for a comfortable, quiet stay in the centre of everything with a bit of space, you can’t beat the Somerset On The Pier Tasmania!
