I have been to Westerway, a small town in southern central Tasmania, many times. My sister and her family live there and I love how it is the complete opposite from my homes in Hobart and Melbourne. It’s so quiet, peaceful and there is so much space.
While we can day trip to Westerway (it’s about an hour from Hobart), this time we decided to spend the night so we could have more time to see the surrounds and hike in Mt Field National Park. We are glad we did!
Not only did we enjoy our stay in this part of the world but we discovered the Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage – a beautiful location for a weekend stopover.
This charming cottage by a river home to platypuses was the perfect way for us to escape the world.
Below, you will find our full Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage review including what the cottage is like, what facilities exist and where you can find the cottage.
Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage Review
The Platypus Cottage Tasmania is located at 1658 Gordon River Rd, Westerway just a short, 8-minute drive from the Mt Field National Park Visitor Centre. It’s next door to the Possum Shed Cafe and close to the Westerway Raspberry Farm.
The very cute, red cottage is on the main road right by the Tyenna River. It’s a peaceful outlook and we had fun playing and looking for platypuses. The best part is that the sound of the river drowns out the sound of the occasional car on the road and is a great background sound.
Check in wasn’t as smooth as it could be as I didn’t receive any check-in information in advance and there was no information at the cottage on arrival. Add in the fact that my mobile doesn’t work in Westerway (Vodafone) and it was frustrating.
Once we could get a phone call out though, we had the code to get the keys from a lockbox on the cottage and we were all set.
The cottage itself has two bedrooms with a queen bed in one and two single beds in the other.
On entry to the cottage, we were in the living room complete with TV and wood heater ready to go. On the left was the second bedroom and straight ahead the kitchen and dining area.
The kitchen is simple but has everything you need. There is a small fridge (with only a teeny freezer), microwave, small stove and grill. We were able to cook dinner and breakfast no problem (there isn’t anywhere in the surrounding town to eat except for lunch so you will want to bring supplies).
From the kitchen, there are great views to the river as well as a balcony.
On one side of the kitchen is the main bedroom and the other side, a big bathroom with shower. The main bedroom has awesome views to the river and entry to the balcony as well.
There’s a small BBQ on the balcony and all linen and towels are supplied.
The backyard is definitely the highlight though. There are a few big trees and the river right there. It’s gorgeous.
A nice touch is port and chocolate being provided on arrival.
If you are travelling with a baby, I noticed a high chair and a portacot. In addition to the wood heater, there were two electric heaters which we did need even in December.
The website for the cottage describes it as rustic. I think it is much nicer than what I think of when I hear rustic. It’s well presented, comfortable and has lots of character. We really liked it.
It’s spacious and was plenty big enough for our family. I can also see it working well for a romantic weekend away.
There are not many dining options in Westerway and its best to come with your own food to prepare. There is the Possum Shed Cafe next door which is generally open lunch times (great food) and there is a local shop and you can get some delicious raspberries at the nearby raspberry farm.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay while visiting Mt Field National Park, exploring this region or just want to get away from Hobart for the weekend, the Platypus Playground Riverside Cottage is a great choice.
It’s comfortable, well presented and in an awesome location. We really enjoyed our stay here and are certain we’ll be back!
