Know much about platypuses? Ever seen one up close?
If you’ve ever wanted to know more about platypuses (or echidnas) or want to get close to this mysterious creature then the Platypus House Beauty Point is the perfect place to head!
Located an easy 45 minutes drive from Launceston on a pier, it’s also an easy place to visit in a scenic location. On an easy 45 minute tour of the Tasmania Platypus House, you can learn a lot and have a lot of fun.
Below, I share my full review of the Platypus House and describe exactly what you can expect from a visit here so you can make a decision if it’s the right place for you to visit.
Platypus House Review
You visit the Platypus House via guided tour which runs at least hourly and more often when it’s busy. It’s good to book ahead to get your preferred time.
On arrival, you can check out the gift shop while you wait for your tour then it’s through to the first room to get an introduction to platypuses and echidnas. Although this place is called the Platypus House, it’s just as much about echidnas as platypuses.
We learned about Monotremes, the animal group that platypuses and echidnas belong to and much more information about them from our guide including how they poison humans! Once we had learned a lot, it was time to see the platypuses.
We headed through to a room with several big tanks and huge areas for the resident platypuses (all rescues). The male was first up who is quiet old at 14. He was feed and we got to see him swimming around. His “girlfriend” visited him at one point but got sick of him pretty quick and chose to leave!
There are some other females as well here but males don’t play nice together so there is only one male.
The platypuses are quite magnificent and it’s cool to see them up so close which is not something I have had the opportunity to see before.
The next area was a room with three echidnas. We sat in a circle while some food bowls were laid out of the echidnas and they roamed around us, seemingly completely unaware we could pose a threat and getting very close. It is amazing!
Then it was over. It’s a relatively short visit at 45 minutes but it’s plenty of time to get close to these animals and better understand and appreciate them. It’s not a visit you will forget.
I visited the Platypus House Tas with my three kids aged 4-10. This attraction works great with kids but is also very interesting for adults too.
Platypus House Cost And Tickets
When we visited, the Platypus House entry fee was $25.50 for adults and $59.90 for a family. Of course, Platypus House prices can change at any time and it’s best to contact them directly if you need to confirm the price.
Platypus House Tasmania Location
Platypus House, Beauty Point, Tasmania is at 200 Flinders Street about 45 minutes from the centre of Launceston.
Located on a pier over the water in Beauty Point, this is quite a scenic location. There is parking both by the Platypus House on the pier itself and in a car park on land.
If you want to visit both Platypus House and Seahorse World, it is very easy as they are next to each other on the same pier.
We loved visiting the Platypus House. It’s a great mix of informative and fun and allows for a close animal encounter that is very memorable. I definitely view platypuses and echidnas differently now.
Our kids loved the experience and it’s a very family friendly attraction although our four year old struggled to stay quiet during all the explanation. Our older kids (8 and 10) very much got into the experience and asked many questions.
All up, this is definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in this part of the world.
Definitely consider visiting Seahorse World next door while you are here. Read our full Seahorse World review here. Find more fun things to do in the Tamar Valley here and our full guide of things to do in Launceston and surrounds here.
